New Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program Provides Local Couple with Support

Jacque and her husband are long-time Cheyenne residents. When the couple retired several years ago, they looked forward to doing more of the things they enjoyed: golfing, volunteering and spending time with family and friends.

Jacque said their retirement was everything they had hoped for.

Then, about three years ago, Jacque’s husband was diagnosed with dementia.

It was a blow, but the couple decided to stay positive and continue their active lifestyles for as long as possible.

Their lives went on as usual until last winter, when Jacque noticed that her husband’s symptoms were becoming more pronounced.

Jacque said she felt “lost” about what to do or where to turn for help.

That’s when she heard about a new Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC) program that works with people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

“Some of my friends saw information about the program, and they encouraged me to look into it,” Jacque said.

Started by Cheyenne Regional Medical Center’s Aging Services division, the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program helps community members with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia understand the disease and what needs to be done to ensure their well-being and safety. The program also works alongside the patient’s family and other caregivers.

“We provide education, support and care for the patient and their family or other caregivers,” said Amy Shaw, a certified physician assistant and one of the new program’s founders. “We help the patient and family understand what’s happening, what they can expect and how to make care plans that fit their individual situations.”

“During our first meeting, Amy encouraged me to develop a plan,” Jacque said. “Having a plan right out in front of me has been a tremendous help. And they are there for me if I have a question or need anything.”

While the couple’s lives are forever changed, Jacque said she is thankful that she and her husband continue to enjoy many good times together—and that they have family and friends they can lean on. She is also grateful for the support she has received from CRMC’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program.

“I respect Amy’s knowledge and am so appreciative and grateful for what she has done for us and for the help that Diane [a CRMC social worker] has provided,” Jacque said. “It’s a wonderful program. I’ve even recommended it to a couple of friends.”
