WATCHMAN FLX Device Implant
Cheyenne Regional Medical Center (CRMC) is one of only two hospitals in Wyoming offering the WATCHMAN procedure, a groundbreaking alternative to lifelong blood thinners for individuals with atrial fibrillation (AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem. (Read our press release about the first implant procedure at the hospital here.)
- The WATCHMAN FLX device is the only FDA-approved implant for reducing stroke risk in patients with non-valvular AFib.
- This innovative device seals off the left atrial appendage, preventing harmful blood clots from entering the bloodstream and potentially causing a stroke.
What is Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)?
AFib is a condition where the heart’s upper chambers beat irregularly and too fast.
- Approximately 6 million Americans are estimated to have AFib.
- People with AFib have a five times higher risk of stroke compared to those with normal heart rhythms.
- In individuals with non-valvular AFib, over 90% of stroke-causing clots originate in the left atrial appendage, a small pouch in the heart.
WATCHMAN Implant Procedure
- The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes about an hour.
- Patients usually stay overnight in the hospital and are discharged the following day.
- A small incision is made in the patient’s upper leg, and a thin tube (catheter) containing the WATCHMAN device is inserted.
- The physician guides the device to the left atrial appendage and uses it to seal off the pouch.
- The WATCHMAN device is permanent and does not require replacement.
NuVision Catheter Technology
- NuVision sets a new standard in cardiac care, offering superior imaging and precise navigation during WATCHMAN procedures.
- Its advanced ultrasound technology provides exceptional clarity in real-time visualization of cardiac structures, enhancing accuracy and minimizing complications.
- CRMC is dedicated to adopting cutting-edge medical advancements to improve patient outcomes and deliver the highest quality healthcare. (Read our press release about the NuVision Catheter here.)
